Top 3 Ways for Knowing When Your Copy is “Ready”

For many of the folks we’ve spoken to, copywriting often falls to the bottom of that “aligned work” list. Service providers, coaches, consultants, and leaders bringing in $300k+ each year: you’ve likely done your fair share of writing for your business.

But running a business at this level can become a whirlwind of tasks, deadlines, and messaging, especially if you want to communicate with your audience regularly.

It might become more and more tempting to whip up some words, hit publish, and call it a day. 

But here’s the deal: Your messaging is much more than writing the copy.

If you don’t have a team to take a look at your draft, your best bet is to take a break. That’s right: step away from the screen, if only for a little while, to view your draft with fresh eyes. Often, this second pass will be the needle that moves your draft closer to that compelling story you wish to tell.

Tip #2: Read your copy aloud.

Another trick of the writing trade, this strategy often reveals words, sentences, or even entire paragraphs that read more “hiccup” than “hell yes.” 

By channeling your inner reader, you experience the content just as your audience would. Put yourself in their shoes and get that messaging closer to your ideal.

Tip #3: Enlist a team for a fresh perspective.

Let’s face it: Your messaging copy won’t exist in a vacuum the moment you hit “Send.” It’s always a good idea to send your copy for a read-through with a messaging coach or team member who 1) Understands your magic and 2) Will give it to you straight. 

Notice we didn’t say “best friend” here. It’s essential to choose a messaging partner who knows the ins and outs of copy and shares–and understands–your goals and brand voice. So choose wisely!
